Comforting warmth, attractive decoration or symbols of wealth and status – rugs have many-faceted functions and can trace a long, important cultural history from Occident to Orient. In recent years the seemingly long-outmoded image of carpets and rugs within discourse on design and art has undergone rejuvenation, and carpets are returning to our living spaces as both artworks and design objects.

The exhibition “Well Grounded: Experiments in Contemporary Rug Art” at stilwerk design gallery presents cutting-edge developments in contemporary rugs and carpets. Designers and artists including Jan Kath, Mari Otberg, Daniel Buren, Peter Halley, Elisa Strozyk, Bethan Laura Wood & Oscar Wanless and Silvia Knüppel & Katrin Sonnleitner display their own unique interpretations of these ancient cultural artefacts. The exhibition spans both classic wall and floor rugs and sculptural and architectural experiments that have abandoned traditional functions or recreated them in stunningly original forms.

The focus of the exhibition is the pavilion “Taut Taut” by Bethan Laura Wood and Oscar Wanless, a piece whose form is reminiscent of architectural icons such as Bruno Taut’s Glass Pavilion or Buckminster Fuller‘s geodesic “Biosphere” pavilion for Expo 67. The artists’ choices of colours and materials produce an object which both occupies and creates space and inspires us to raise questions concerning contemporary utopias.
